Fortified town of Saint-Emilion: panoramic pictures and portal of the trinity Chapel (Chapelle de la Trinité) on the Market Square

In the surroundings of Bordeaux we visited the fortified village of Saint- Emilion. I present the town with a series of panoramic pictures which ends with the one of the portal of the Trinity Chapel (Chapelle de la Trinité)  overlooking the Market Square.

Fortified town of St.Emilion: Collegiate and near Cloister

On the upper square there is the beautiful Collegiate whose interior is embellished with precious glass windows of the 1400.

In the nearby cloister we visited the interesting medieval tombs located in  the galleries

Fortified town of St.Emilion: monolithic Church, the donjon, old town, Cadene gate and Brunet gate, Market square, sights

The monolithic church, carved out of the rock , is surmounted by an imposing bell tower.

I show new photos  of the Trinity Church and, further on, the mighty “donjon” (keep, very high and fortified tower).

We saw two beautiful gates in the oldest part of the village: the Cadene gate and the Brunet gate.

I conclude with some views of the heart of the village including the Market Square.

Finally I cannot forget to mention the large number of vineyards which surround Saint- Emilion.

Saint-Bertrand de Comminges: Cathedral of Notre-Dame

Saint- Bertrand de Comminges is a medieval village placed on a hill. On the top there is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. It is a tall and mighty building which dates back to the thirteenth century.

The facade is part of the bell tower.

Saint-Bertrand de Comminges: inside the Cathedral of Notre-Dame

The interior seems huge because there is a single nave. We could admire very nice large polychrome glass windows. The chorus decorated with scenes of sacred history is particularly important. The nave is divided in the middle by a wooden panel with polychrome bas-reliefs of great beauty.Behind the main altar there is the great mausoleum of St- Bertrand.

The cloister has beautiful galleries with medieval tombs. The paired columns are decorated with carved capitals. A capital is decorated with the four evangelists.

Along the highway at Pau: monument dedicated to Tour de France in the Pyrenees

In a gas station along the highway, well-advertised, we stopped to see the monument dedicated to the Tour de France in the Pyrenees.

The monument clearly illustrates the succession of ascents and descents, and towards the end, it changes colour from silver to yellow which is the color of the t-shirt of the Tour winner

I have so many memories of my childhood when I cheered Coppi and Bartali, then Gimondi, Moser, Battaglin, Italian champions who competed with Kubler, Robic, Van Steemberger, Geminiani, Poulidor, Merckx. And many times our champions were the winners…. .
