6-day trip to Ecuador
Visiting Quito, Mitad del Mundo, the Galapagos Islands6-day trip to Ecuador visiting Quito, Mitad del Mundo, the Galapagos Islands.
Our visit to Quito , capital of Ecuador, was short and difficult .
It was short because of the delay of our flight and difficult because we missed the daylight hours; we had to visit the historic center of the capital with little light even due to the rainy weather and low clouds.
Independence Square is wonderful and is overlooked by the Palace, seat of government, and the Cathedral of Quito. Our visit to Quito, capital of Ecuador, was short and difficult.

The Presidential Palace is a white building where the presence of the President is witnessed by the national flag flying on top of it.
Two guards in full dress uniform garrison the main entrance and it is forbidden to enter the palace.
I could only catch sight of the entrance and an internal staircase.

QuitoQuito, the Cathedral
Being late, the Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus were closed; the latter is considered by the “Quiteños” the most beautiful church of Ecuador.

Instead, we found open the church of St. Francis, the oldest church of Ecuador.
The ceiling of the nave is very beautiful and the high altar is finely crafted.
In fact it is considered one of the masterpieces of Baroque art.

QuitoQuito, Monument to the Equator
We could not miss a visit to the most symbolic site of Ecuador: the place where the equator passes.

Mitad del Mundo
QuitoQuito, Mitad del Mundo
In the place they built a monument called the “Mitad del Mundo” (Middle of the World).
In 1736, as a result of complicated measurements, it was found that in that place passes the equator (marked with the red line). These calculations gave rise to the metric system and proved that the earth is flattened at the poles and is bulged at the equator.
Inside the monument, it was very interesting to visit the Museum of Ethnography.
